Are 3D printed wall plugs strong enough?

For light to medium fixings — pictures, shelves, light brackets — yes. They are prototype parts with no tested load rating. Do not use them for overhead, structural or safety-critical fixings. Test a printed plug in scrap material first.

What material should I print wall plugs in?

PETG or ABS give better creep resistance and grip than PLA, which softens under sustained load. Print with 100% infill for maximum expansion force. PETG is the best all-round choice; ABS needs an enclosure.

How does the plug expand in the hole?

The plug has radial slots open at the tip. When you drive a screw into the pilot bore, the screw body forces the slotted fingers outward against the wall of the drilled hole. The collar fins stop the plug rotating while the screw bites.
